WILMINGTON, N.C. (January 9, 2025) – US MgO announced today that construction is underway on the country’s first commercial-scale manufacturing plant for magnesium oxide (MgO) sheathing panels for wall, floor, and subfloor applications. Located in Wilmington, North Carolina, the facility will be outfitted with proprietary manufacturing equipment and processes to produce a new type of MgO panel.
After two years of successful prototyping at its laboratory, the facility will serve as a precursor to a larger facility breaking ground soon in nearby Leland, North Carolina.
“We’re thrilled to share this exciting news of not one, but two manufacturing facilities that will produce the most innovative sheathing panels available to the North American design and construction industries,” said Ryan Miller, General Manager of US MgO. “After years of hard work in the lab, we’re excited to bring a new U.S.-made version of Innovation MgO sheathing panels to the masses in the years ahead,” said Miller.
The new North Carolina-made panels will be available in late 2025. Panels are comprised of a proprietary MgO cement composition that provides industry-leading fire resistance, moisture resistance, structural strength, and weatherability. The new panels augment US MgO’s current inventory of high-quality products that began shipping to projects nationwide in late 2024.
“Over the past 15 years, we’ve heard from customers that domestic sourcing and production of MgO panels is needed for this product category to replace commodity products such as wood and gypsum,” said Miller. “We’re glad to be first. Our new Innovation MgO sheathing panels outperform traditional fiberglass mat gypsum-based panels, wood panels, and other MgO panels.”
MgO panels have struggled to garner acceptance in federal and state government projects, as nearly all have been imported from China. With its new North Carolina-made panels, US MgO is pursuing federal and state government projects in its home state and across the country.
